DONCASTER ST LEGER 1832

The 57th winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 18th September 1832 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Margrave, a chestnut colt by Muley out of Principessa's dam, owned by Mr John Gully. In a year in which the entrance fee doubled to 50 sovereigns, this did not deter the number of subscribers. After a single false start it was Mr Powlett's unnamed filly who led the way, closely followed by Carlton and Rone. Margrave took up the running passing the Red House and held on by a length despite the determined challenge of Birdcatcher. In a career of 10 races, Margrave won 6 and was second in 2 more races, although he was only 4th in the Epsom Derby. Over Round 120%
